The leaves turn. The mornings bite. The pride doesn't change.
Fall is when military families start reaching for a layer. Maybe it's the early drive to a basic training graduation. A Friday night under the stadium lights. A cold sideline, a long flight home, or just the first morning you can see your breath.
Whatever the moment, the question is the same: which layer? We carry three that do very different jobs: the Nike Bomber Jacket, the Nike Dri-FIT Primary Crewneck and the CornerStone Fleece Overlay Jacket. Each one is officially licensed and each one carries an embroidered branch emblem, but they're built for different days. This guide breaks down the differences so you can pick the right one, or the right two.
The Bomber |
The Crewneck |
The Fleece |
The Short Answer
- Going somewhere that matters? Choose the bomber. It's the lightest and the sharpest.
- On the move all day? Choose the crewneck. Dri-FIT handles the sweat, and it layers under anything.
- Outside in the cold? Choose the fleece. It's the heaviest and warmest, with water-repellent panels up top.

1. The Nike Bomber Jacket: Sharp Enough for the Ceremony
The lightest layer, and the one you dress up in.
The bomber is a classic for a reason. This one is a genuine Nike jacket (style NKFQ4759) in a 5 oz. cotton-nylon blend, with the traditional rib-knit collar and cuffs, a full-length dyed-to-match zipper and snap-front pockets. Your branch emblem is embroidered on the chest and the Nike Swoosh is embroidered on the sleeve.
What makes it different from the other two is polish. It's not bulky and it's not athletic-looking. It sits clean over a polo or button-down, which makes it the layer families reach for when the day has a dress code, even an unofficial one.
Choose the bomber if:
- You're headed to a graduation, promotion, retirement, reunion or homecoming
- You want one jacket that works for dinner, travel and a cool evening outside
- It's crisp, not cold. It's a light layer, not a winter coat.

2. The Nike Dri-FIT Primary Crewneck: Built to Move
The everyday workhorse, and the best base for layering.
If the bomber is the layer you dress up in, the crewneck is the one you live in. It's built with Nike Dri-FIT, which moves moisture away from your skin so it can evaporate faster. That keeps you drier when you're working out, walking a long parade field or hauling bags through an airport.
The crewneck cut is the other big difference. There's no hood and no zipper, so there's no bulk. That makes it the best layer in this lineup to wear under something: under the bomber on a cool night, under the fleece on a cold one. Rib-knit at the neckline, cuffs and hem keeps the fit clean. The branch emblem is embroidered with the Nike Swoosh on the chest, so the look stays understated: pride without an oversized graphic.
Choose the crewneck if:
- You want something you'll wear several times a week, not just for events
- You're active: PT, the gym, game days, chasing kids around a park
- You want a mid layer you can build on as the temperature drops

3. The CornerStone Fleece Overlay Jacket: Made for the Cold Mornings
The warmest layer, and the toughest.
When fall turns serious, this is the one. The CornerStone CSF750 is an 11.5 oz. heavyweight brushed fleece, more than twice the weight of the bomber. It's built for work, not just looks. Woven overlays on the shoulders and chest carry a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish to shrug off light rain and moisture. Reinforced elbow overlays handle wear and tear, and an anti-pill finish keeps the fleece looking clean.
The details are practical, too. A zip-through cadet collar blocks wind at your neck, and zippered hand pockets keep your keys where you left them. An adjustable drawcord drop-tail hem seals out drafts. The sleeves have a smooth lining, so the fleece slides right on over a crewneck or hoodie without bunching. It comes in Tundra Green and Black with the U.S. Air Force Hap Arnold Wings embroidered on the chest.
Choose the fleece if:
- You're outside early or late: hunting, camping, yard work, the job site
- You want real warmth without moving to a full winter coat
- You need something rugged that can take a beating
Which Layer for Which Moment?
Basic training graduation in the fall: Choose the bomber. It photographs well, looks put-together next to a uniform, and won't overheat you indoors. If the ceremony is outside on a cold morning, wear the crewneck underneath.
Football Saturdays and cold sidelines: Choose the fleece. Standing still in the cold is when the heavyweight fleece and wind-blocking collar earn their keep.
Travel and homecomings: Choose the bomber or the crewneck. Both are light enough to pack, and both look sharp walking out of arrivals.
Everyday wear: Choose the crewneck. It's the one you'll actually reach for on a Tuesday.
Layer Them: The Two-Piece Fall Kit
The real answer for a lot of people is two. These pieces were made to work together:
- Crewneck + Bomber ($191.98): Dress-ready warmth for evening events and fall travel.
- Crewneck + Fleece ($169.98): The cold-weather combination. The fleece's smooth sleeve lining slides right over the Dri-FIT crewneck.
Both combinations clear our free shipping threshold of $100. So does the bomber on its own.
Sizing Tips
- Measure your chest first. Measure under the arms, around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level. Then compare it to the size chart on each product page.
- Bomber: Sizes run XS–4XL. The size guide recommends, for example, a Medium for a 37½–41" chest and a Large for 41–44". If you plan to wear it over a crewneck and you're between sizes, consider going up.
- Crewneck: Sizes run S–4XL (no XS). If you'll mostly wear it under a jacket, avoid sizing up so it stays smooth underneath.
- Fleece: Sizes run XS–4XL with a relaxed fit made for layering, so most people can stay with their usual size.
- Buying a gift? A 30-day return policy gives you room if the size isn't quite right.
Care Tips to Keep It Looking Sharp
Always follow the care label inside your garment first. As general guidance for embroidered performance pieces:
- Wash inside out on cold to protect the embroidery and Swoosh.
- Skip fabric softener on the Dri-FIT crewneck. It can coat performance fabric and reduce how well it moves moisture.
- Go easy on heat. Tumble dry low or hang dry, especially for the fleece, to keep it soft and pill-free.
- Close the zippers before washing the bomber and fleece so they don't snag other clothes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which layer is the warmest?
The CornerStone fleece. At 11.5 oz., it's the heaviest of the three, with a wind-blocking collar and drawcord hem. The bomber is the lightest at 5 oz.
Is the bomber waterproof?
No. The bomber is a cotton-nylon jacket made for style and light warmth, not rain. If you'll be out in damp weather, the fleece's water-repellent overlays on the shoulders and chest handle light rain and moisture.
Is the fleece available for other branches?
Yes. Besides Air Force, it's available for the Army and the Marine Corps.
Are these officially licensed?
Yes. Every piece in this guide is officially licensed and ships from our South Carolina facility. Every purchase supports the MWR program.
Do these make good gifts for military families?
They're some of our favorites to give. The bomber suits milestone moments like graduations and retirements, and the crewneck suits everyday pride. They're made for service members, veterans, and the moms, dads, spouses and families who stand behind them.
